Event Description:

Is your school moving into a standards-based system, and you are looking for examples from a music classroom (rather than math or language arts)? Here is an opportunity to discuss the research and practical implementation of standards-based teaching and learning in a music classroom with an experienced music educator. Our work will include:

  • Understanding the standards-based system relative to the music classroom
  • Developing reporting standards in music
  • Exploring the role and power of feedback and reflection in music
  • Creating standards-based assessments of singing and playing instruments
  • Creating standards-based assessments of knowledge such as rhythm or music vocabulary
  • Recognizing the prominence of "participation" in ensemble classes and how reporting on that could look in a standards-based system
  • Understanding how [instrumental] practice logs fit in
  • Assigning grades from standards-based evidence
  • Collaborative thinking with others who teach the same music classes you do

Plan to arrive about 8:15 am to get settled with a beverage and breakfast treat. One hour is planned for lunch on your own.
