Regardless of advantages or disadvantages your students might bring to your music classroom in terms of socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, or family circumstances, what can you do to improve equity so all will achieve at high levels?
In this workshop, we will explore strategies for:
- Creating a classroom community that supports fairness for all
- Ensuring all students see personal connections and relevance to the music
- Encouraging all students to participate, collaborate, contribute
- Scaffolding experiences through priming and student-centered inquiry
- Engaging all students to achieve in music at high levels.
Registration fee includes materials and morning/afternoon snacks. One hour is planned for lunch on your own.

Workshop facilitator is Dr. Wendy Barden, respected Minnesota music educator, national clinician, and published author with the Neil A. Kjos Music Company. Before retiring in 2013, Barden served 21 years as K-12 Music Coordinator in the Osseo, MN school district. Currently, she is teaching the International Baccalaureate music class at Park Center High School and works with arts educators across the country through her company, Segue Consulting Partners. Barden holds a B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. She is a member of Phi Beta Mu and the Minnesota Music Educators Hall of Fame.
